Worst falls have been ones where I've gotten a concussion, but none really have good stories behind them--pretty much all were when I went one way and the horse went another. However, my best fall story was when I was asked to ride a horse with severe fear issues being mounted. In the split second when he couldn't see you between the ground and knowing you were on his back, he FREAKED--bolting, bucking, spinning. I was with a trainer who was showing me the techniques she had used to get him more and more accustomed to mounting up with minimal theatrics. Unfortunately, they involved mounting up from the ground very quickly. I am 5'4"...and this was a 17hh Percheron cross! I could mount from the ground, but not fast enough. He started his bronco routine, and I was able to hang on for about two bucks (with one stirrup, mind you) until he turned. I thought I slid off his back end. Nope. According to onlookers, I flew over his head, crashed into the side of the round pen, and landed in a pile of poo. That part I remember.
Oh my. I'm 5'2" and Orion is almost 15hh. I have enough trouble mounting him from the ground, even with a Western saddle, so I can only imagine! I do not mount gracefully from the ground. I envy those who can. lol
