It’s A Struggle

While I was listening to my little dude jabber to himself yesterday (he was tired but teething and didn’t want to nap), I thought I might write a bit.

This virus and consequent quarantine has taken a toll on all of us. And even though it’s not required anymore, we’ve continued to do it for the most part because of Kam and other family members we’re around. My mom’s household and Darryl’s mom are around us on a regular basis to help watch Kam while we work, so in the interest of protecting both us and them, we don’t go out much and don’t see many people. I get the majority of our groceries using Walmart pickup. Kam’s WIC items require an in-person purchase, so I get them from Kroger where there usually aren’t as many people. And anything I can’t get from Walmart, I order online, usually from Amazon because I have Prime and get most things quicker that way. That’s become the norm.

We don’t see as much of our family as we would like. We’ve had to put off doing a lot of things we wanted to do with Kam that we thought we’d be able to by now. It’s so hard thinking about how much we wanted to be able to just take him anywhere and everywhere and show him off to everyone, but with the current health crisis going on in the world, that just doesn’t feel safe right now.

And it’s not just disappointment I feel, but a profound sadness. Most people understand our decisions, but some don’t. I know that some judge me, and there are some that do that are people who are close to us. Normally I wouldn’t care, but with everything that we’ve been through since Kam was born, my skin is not as thick as it once was. I’m worn down. I’m tired. I’m mentally and emotionally exhausted, and my filter is damn near gone. I cry on a pretty regular basis over the smallest of things because I’m just at the end of my rope, and sometimes any little thing feels like a monumental task or a huge hit to my self esteem and confidence.

For those who don’t know, which I know would probably only be strangers to me, Kam was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot when he was 8 days old. It’s a congenital heart defect that does not repair itself over time. We were told he would have to have at least one surgery, possibly more, to repair everything (this CHD has multiple things involved) before he was 6 months old. At that point, we decided to sort of keep to ourselves for the most part until his heart was fixed, because if he got sick, not only would it be more dangerous for him than for a normal baby, but it could delay his surgery if he was even just slightly sniffly on the day of. Our “quarantine” wasn’t as strict then as it is now, but we did have basic rules in place and limited our contact more than usual with people and places.

He ended up being diagnosed with RSV the same day they had offered us a surgery date that would have been shortly before his 5-month birthday, and with that diagnosis, his surgery was delayed at least 6 weeks. If not for the RSV, he would have had it March 18th (a week or less away from the day he was diagnosed with RSV). But because of the delay, we were looking at April 28th, his 6 month birthday. Then, almost immediately after scheduling that, COVID hit, and due to the hospital’s restrictions, we were delayed once again.

The hospital started allowing elective surgeries again less than a week before April 28th, and they called to tell us the surgery was still on. So on the 27th, we went to Morgantown and didn’t get to come home until a little over a week later on May 5th. It was one of the scariest, most stressful weeks of my life. I only saw Darryl for maybe 10 minutes each day because we could only be in the hospital one at a time. If Kam hadn’t been the age he is, we wouldn’t have been allowed in at all. But we assumed 12-hour shifts with him, and we only saw each other on the way to/from the hotel because we only had one vehicle with us.

Since then, Kam has done amazingly well. I know that Darryl and I still have some mental/emotional effects from the stress of it. But we’re all healthy, and that’s the important part.

But COVID isn’t over, and it won’t be for the foreseeable future because finding a vaccine and a treatment takes time. Our area started having community spread recently. As of yesterday, the active cases have come back down from what they were, so I’m hoping maybe that particular “outbreak” is contained, but who knows. So many people still think it’s their fundamental right to not wear a mask or follow the guidelines presented to them (that are there to try to provide at least some protection for the community as a whole if everyone would do it), that I have very little faith that we won’t see more spread. There are still people gathering in groups. There are still people from different households congregating and talking close together, no masks, no social distancing, nothing. And then some of those same people travel. So who’s to say they won’t attend an event that starts a major spread and then, whether they live here or not, that they might travel through my area. It’s on the way to a lot of nearby tourist destinations, and a lot of people stop to eat or get gas here on their way to a lot of other places. Even if our particular community followed the guidelines to a T, it’s not a guarantee that we’ll all stay safe.

I know there are no guarantees to start with, but with all we’ve been through in the past 9 months already, I’m just not comfortable with a lot of things or with seeing a lot of people right now. I’m already at work 5 days a week, where I wear a mask, so in theory I’m somewhat safe. And I’m not “living in fear”, but I am scared. And I’m tired of people thinking it’s ok not to respect my opinions and choices, even when it’s behind my back (because guess what, some of that gets back to me). As I said earlier, I’d normally just let that go and move on, but it’s not that easy right now. I’m barely hanging onto my sanity as it is. So when I hear that someone’s been spreading lies and making something I said or did into something much bigger than it was, it’s really painful and makes me really not trust much of anyone. I’m tired of it. And I’m just plain tired.

I could go on and on. But honestly, talking about how stressed and sad I am, just makes me sadder and more stressed. So instead, I usually just try to take each day as it comes. I try to remember that no matter how important someone might have been before, that if they can act the way they do, maybe they shouldn’t have been that important, at least to me. I try to remember that overall, my family and friends support me. I try to just focus on Kam and Darryl. I try to focus on things that I enjoy, like playing with and teaching Kam, crocheting things for our family, trying to get my garden to grow, researching what to do with the gobs of veggies that I hope we’ll have once these plants are ready, and how I can get a head start on next year’s garden so I can do more stuff then. I try to focus on keeping my house clean (3 cats, a dog, a baby, and 2 adults make quite a mess every day) and improving it in some way a little bit each week. Those are my outlets, and it’s what I try to focus on so I don’t have to think about the negativity.

I hope if you’re reading this that you’re well. I hope that maybe if you were feeling this way and feeling isolated, maybe you know that you aren’t the only one. I understand. And if you haven’t felt this way, I hope that you won’t ever have to, but I hope it provided some insight into how those of us that feel this way, actually think and feel. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m trying to do what I feel is right and safe for my family. I hate not having the contact that we used to with other members of family and friends. I can’t wait for the day that we can go back to some form of normal. But in the meantime, I’m struggling through.

Have a good day, friends.

Kameron Troy White

Hi!  It's been a while again...

So much has changed since I last wrote on this blog...as it seems happens every time I take a break, intended or not.

For one, I am six-and-a-half months pregnant!  Baby boy Kameron Troy White is due on October 31st!

I've always been back and forth on whether or not I wanted kids, but in the past year or so I've started realizing that I really do want to.... However, Darryl and I definitely did not plan them yet, as there are other things we wanted to do first in order to kind of actually do things in some semblance of order.  We've definitely not done things the traditional way in the rest of our relationship.  Nature and God apparently had other plans though!

So far, being pregnant has not been too bad, other than the emotional ups and downs that hormones have brought (more so lately than earlier on), the exhaustion, and the aches and pains.  For the past little over a month's time, I've been able to feel Kameron kick and move, and he's getting soo much stronger than he was initially.  I was about 20 weeks when I first felt him.  I'm 26 weeks now, today.  It's absolutely awesome feeling him roll and move.  The poor kid's probably going to have violent cold chills just like his dad.  We've already seen it happen once on the ultrasound when the tech basically tickled him to try to get him to move so she could see his spine!

This pregnancy has been pretty normal, which I'm extremely thankful for.  I have friends and family who've had more difficult pregnancies, and I was so nervous that we were going to end up going down one of those roads when I first found out.  So far, so good though!  Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way!  Our next big hurdle is probably the glucose test I have to do in August, so we'll see what happens with that. Yuck!

Labor Day Fun - Writing Challenge, Day 20

So I didn’t write yesterday...I had every intention of sitting down and putting words to a post covering our Jubilee experience (it was so hot out, but still so fun!).

Unfortunately, I ended up sunburnt because stupid me forgot to take sunscreen. I also ended up dehydrated, which in turn screwed with my IST, and I came very close to passing out or getting sick at Darryl’s mom’s house later that evening. By the time we got home, I was in no shape to write. I just did everything I knew to get it all under control and took a nap. Once I slept for a little while, the ibuprofen and part of a Gatorade I’d drank, along with the cold shower I took, all seemed to have calmed it down a lot. I no longer had the pounding migraine, high pulse, or nausea to anywhere near the extent it had been. I ended up staying up a little while longer and then went to bed for the night. So no writing that night!

I’ll save the Jubilee post for tomorrow, since I’m currently writing from my phone in bed. I took a few photos I want to share properly!

It’s been too hot out most of the weekend to do any of the yard work I wanted to do, so instead I did a few things inside and read most of the day during the time we were home. I’ve been working my way through “Echoes of Titanic”, and it’s a great mystery read! I’ve barely been able to put it down today. I’d highly recommend it to anyone, and I’m not even finished with it yet!

We also went to the new Harbor Freight store today. Darryl was like a kid in a candy store and stocked up on a few tools he’s been drooling over for months. He took this week off from work and is doing some work around the house, so the stuff he bought should help things move a little faster and make the work a bit easier!

An Easy Saturday - Writing Challenge, Day 19

Real quick before I get started...congrats to the EHS Tigers on their win last night over the PBHS Colts. Check out my social media for a few videos from the end of the night. As a former band geek, I had to at least get some footage of the current band geeks. I’m super excited about seeing what their field show looks like by their home show and Forest Festival, because I thought it needed a little cleaning (expected this early in the season) but is going to be amazing.

——————————

Today has been a good day.

We ultimately decided to sacrifice going to the fair this year. The week was just too busy, and this weekend has been/will be busy, too. So we unfortunately nixed the plan to fit in the fair today in order to make the weekend a little more relaxed. It’s no fun if you’re running like a chicken with its head cut off the whole time!

So instead, we ran to the store and later went to Fancy Paws for their grand re-opening at their new location. We took my and my mom’s dog, and they did a painted “paw flower” with him. He got some treats. He made friends with our friend’s dog who usually hates him. That was a miracle all on its own!

We went home and hung out to watch the WVU game. And then we came over to our friends’ house to watch more football. (Though admittedly, I’ve been reading and socializing more than watching. Lol)

Speaking of reading, I just finished “A Simple Favor”. I really liked the story. But I wasn’t a huge fan of how it’s written. I’m not going to get into it because if you’re planning to read it or go see the movie, I wouldn’t want to ruin it for you. The story itself was interesting. I truly couldn’t put it down for that reason alone and read most of it in one day, today. I still can’t wait to see the movie. I’m excited to see how Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick play out these characters.

Tomorrow, we go to the Jubilee. And it’s the part of the weekend I’m the most excited about!

Books I’m Reading - Writing Challenge, Day 18

So in my quest to read more, I’ve started a couple new books.

One of them is “Echoes of Titanic” by Mindy Starns Clark & John Campbell Clark. Darryl bought it for me a couple Christmases ago, and it got put up on a shelf with the intention of reading it when I finished some other stuff. I just never got around to it.

So far it seems to be about a businesswoman who is running a business that was brought into success by her grandmother, who was a survivor of the Titanic. Only, it seems the grandmother might not be exactly who she said she is. She’s a survivor of the Titanic for sure, but she may have assumed the identity of someone who perished. I’m not far enough into it to know for sure which is the truth!

The other book is “A Simple Favor: A Novel” by Darcey Bell. The movie is coming out soon, and I can’t wait. I found out a couple weeks ago that the movie is based on a book, so I bought it for my Kindle today! So far, it’s a little eh, but I’m not far enough in to be comfortable saying that’s what I think of the whole premise. I’m dying to see the movie just to figure out the mysterious trailers!

What are some other good books you’ve read lately??

Labor Day Weekend - Writing Challenge, Day 17

I have a three day weekend coming up, and I absolutely cannot wait.

High school football game Friday night, possibly going to the fair and maybe the Jackson’s Mill Jubilee on Saturday, and Jubilee on Sunday if we don’t go Saturday...or heck maybe we’ll go both days. Oh, and a WVU game to watch Saturday as well. Monday’s plans remain to be seen, but I’m excited for the long weekend regardless.

We’ve been trying to get our plans in order all week, and there are just so many things going on that we want to do, all happening on one weekend, that it’s been a pain trying to fit everything in. I don’t think we’ll be able to do some of the other things we thought about - a concert in town Friday night, a trip to visit family for the game on Saturday (not out of the plans for sure yet), and a visit out to the barn (that I might just do on Monday since we don’t have any plans for then yet!).

Is anyone else having the too many plans problem that we are?  What exciting things do you have going on for Labor Day weekend?

Milo - Writing Challenge, Day 16

Milo hasn’t been officially introduced on the blog yet!

Here’s his story.

Darryl and I went to his mom’s on June 10th and went to his uncle’s next door.  While outside, I saw this tiny little black and white kitten who looked completely terrified and lost. He was in the corner between the porch and trailer and was literally trying to climb through a wall to get under the porch.

I went over and picked him up. He immediately snuggled against me. Anytime anyone tried to come near me or reach for him, he huddled into me and tried to hide from them.

When it was time to head back down to Darryl’s mom’s, we started looking around for the kitten’s litter to put him back with. Pretty quickly, we figured out that he didn’t belong with any of the litters there. None of the them were the same size or age, and Darryl’s mom was familiar with the litters there and knew he didn’t belong. We looked all over to see if there were any new kittens, but there weren’t. The couple of other female cats who lived around there that had been pregnant hadn’t had their kittens yet. So, we deduced that he must have been abandoned - either by a person dropping him off or by his real mom, wherever she was.  I didn’t know what to do. I asked Darryl if maybe I should just put him back where I’d found him, just in case.

Darryl said, “You do realize, if you put him back, he’s going to die, right? He’s too young to survive on his own. He won’t be here the next time we come over.”

I replied with, “Well, what do I do?? We can’t take him home. We already basically have a zoo. We don’t need a new kitten right now.”

Darryl said, “Just think about it.” And he walked away, back to his mom’s.

I stood there undecided...for about 15 seconds. I couldn’t figure out if I should put him back or hold onto him and follow Darryl. I ended up taking him down to the house and held him on my lap in the living room. Darryl and his mom kept talking about how the kitten had imprinted on me. He acted like he thought I was his mom and clung to me, and he was scared to death of everyone else.

Eventually I started looking up orphaned kitten care on my phone and deduced that he was going to need formula to start with. Followed pretty soon by that mixed with canned kitten food, and eventually would graduate to regular kitten food. There were also some pretty gross things about helping them go to the bathroom. Thankfully that only lasted a day or two before he started going on his own!

So, it was decided. We were taking him home. We had to stop at Walmart so I could run in and get the stuff he needed while Darryl waited with him in the truck. On the way home, I decided to name him Milo.

Ever seen the movie Milo and Otis? I grew up watching that as a kid. Bo looks exactly like that Milo, and that’s what I wanted to name him when we rescued him. But he was meant to be Darryl’s cat, and Darryl liked the name Bojangles. So, Bo is Bojangles Beauregard (since he’s called BoBo half the time). I still wanted a cat named Milo. So that’s who the kitten became.

And y’all...

If you’ve seen the movie, you know how much of a troublemaker the cinematic Milo is. My Milo totally lives up to the reputation associated with the name.  He was 4 weeks old when we found him.  He didn't really get introduced to the other cats for a couple weeks, not until he'd had his first vaccines.  But as soon as he got over his fear of the other animals...

He terrorizes the other cats. He’s best friends with the dog (just like Bo).  He gets into everything. He’s always places he shouldn’t be. I came home yesterday at lunch and found everything from the coffee table on the floor...the other cats know better. Milo, however, has had the time of his life jumping from furniture to furniture and taking flying leaps off of things lately, skidding off things as he goes by.

He’s a mighty fly/gnat hunter.  He naps with the dog. He has no fear.

No one messes with Bo’s tail...but Milo does... No fear.

Chase two cats three times his size across the house as they hiss and spit and yowl at him? No problem.

Shove a full grown cat out of their food bowl so he can eat it instead? Why not?

When you correct him, he gleefully bounces back into doing what he was already doing and makes you correct him ten thousand more times.  Raising your voice doesn't typically phase him at all.  And lord help you if he's super focused on something.  Like stalking one of his brothers.  He will be so intensely focused that your voice will not exist to him.

He’s definitely showing signs of being an alpha cat. And so is Bo, which should be pretty interesting...

If you follow me on social media, you've already seen about a hundred photos (and that might not be a full exaggeration), so I kept it limited on here, but check out my Instagram for lots more!

Summer Hiking and Camping in West Virginia

Hello, friends. :)   I mentioned last post that I've been scouting out hiking trails for my family on AllTrails and other resources late...
